Addi here, #SR4G Junior reporter, and today I will be talking about trees and their purpose.
Trees release a special chemical called oxygen.
Without trees and other plants there wouldn’t be enough oxygen for humans and animals to breathe.
Did you know that a tree’s branches grow upward, as they are looking for a oxygen which is at a specific elevation?
Some trees can grow as tall as 20 giraffes.
Some tree roots grow so far, sometimes growing into other tree roots, that they communicate to one another one about their surroundings.
Leaves produce oxygen during photosynthesis.
The green color in the leaves comes from a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps trees absorb energy from the sun during photosynthesis. Without leaves to create food using photosynthesis, the remaining sugar is stored in the trees’ root system until Spring. As the days get shorter, the nutrients that feeds the tree and its leaves, green chlorophyll, breaks down the pigment and the leaves change color.
Trees are also home to many animals, birds, and insects.
What’s your favorite tree?
